I don't know that I agree with Malcolm's analysis of the problem, but I do agree that the semantics of operational data are bleached out in the development process. Analysts often painstakingly learn the semantics in the analysis and design phase, but it's all rendered out of it when we get to relational databases. That's why I think you're on the right track looking into semantic technology. I believe that is going to lead us out of this mess, not more architecture.
